S’No Way! More White Stuff in August?

14-08-28_snowteo

It’d be hard to argue that winter isn’t rarin’ to go for Crested Butte after checking out the mountains around here late Tuesday.  Today’s shots are from yesterday evening around CB . . . rain, lightning and a cold front moved through the area in the afternoon/early evening and when the clouds pulled back to reveal the peaks, they were looking snowy and gorgeous.   That’s as white as I can remember seeing the mountains in August, hopefully a good omen for the coming winter.  Today’s first shot is looking out at Teocalli Mountain.

The snow on the mountains wrapped up what had been a really pretty day in the high country Tuesday.  Morning clouds lingered around the peaks and valleys until nearly noon . . . I’ll share some of those shots with you tomorrow.  The forecast shows another decent chance of thunderstorms today, but things should be drying out and warming somewhat as we head into the weekend and next week, so it’s not quite winter yet.  For those of you heading to CB for the holiday weekend, the moisture will have the single track riding great—you’ll be loving it.

Have a very pleasant day out there and we’ll catch you tomorrow.

USA Pro Challenge Stage 2 Finish in Mt. Crested Butte

14-08-20_cloudsnrain

Good Wednesday morning from Crested Butte—we’re seeing low clouds and rain across the much of the Gunnison Country today.  Our first shot is looking out from CB South at the rains and grayness clinging to the sides of Whetstone Mountain this morning.  Our temps are hovering right around fifty degrees, headed for a forecasted high in the mid sixties later today.

Wednesday’s shots are from what turned out to be an exciting and rainy USA Pro Challenge finish in Mount Crested Butte Tuesday.  Competitors ran into rain around Horse Ranch Park on Kebler Pass Road, put up with a questionable race stoppage on the paved Kebler downhill and saw Robin Carpenter hang on to fend off his hard-charging rivals for the stage win.  Today’s first shot is of Carpenter crossing the finish line and was sent in by Matthew Johnston—thanks Matt!  The next shot gives you a bit of a feel for the overcast and rainy conditions that had closed in on Mt. CB at the race’s conclusion.  Competitors looked spent and fully chilled as they climbed off their bikes following the stage.

Today’s third shot (thanks again to Matt) is from the post-race podium, with Carpenter getting photos along side legendary snow biking/pond skimming athlete Erica Rasmussen (check out the April seventh Shot of the Day post for the wet and wild evidence) and Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s very own Erica Mueller.  Think the guy in the back is a little chilly?

While the finish probably wasn’t as well attended as it has been in past years (maybe blame it on the rain), those who did turn out once again felt the impressive energy of a well choreographed bicycle race stage finish.  With the production aircraft circling overhead, the law enforcement and support vehicles roaring up Gothic road (lights flashing, sirens squawking), the area adorned with bright banners and colorful props, music thumping from the towers of speakers with the p.a. announcer whipping the cow-bell-equipped crowd into a high frenzy, it was pretty fun.  Put it on your list of to-do’s the next time event comes to Mt. Crested Butte!

Stay dry out there today and we’ll look for you, again, tomorrow.

Meandering Through a Gorgeous Crested Butte Weekend

Good Monday morning—Crested Butte’s kicking off the week with clear skies, a forecasted high of 74 degrees and a thirty-percent chance of rain this afternoon. It was a gorgeous weekend, just about perfect for getting out on the mountain bike and putting in some long miles on the epic CB single track. Many local riders enjoyed their last ride of the season on the Snodgrass trail over the weekend. The trail is now closed until next spring/summer. Today’s shot is of yours truly pedaling out the new Lower Meander trail with the stunning views of the Upper East River Valley in the background.

Yesterday’s West Elk Archers High Mountain 3D Shoot (that I mentioned a few posts back) left little doubt that the Gunnison Country is stuffed with sportsmen and women who enjoy slinging arrows. The event on the backside of the mountain saw triple the predicted turnout …my friends who participated said it was a very good time.

Ready for the Pro Cycle Challenge? It’ll be here tomorrow! The weather’s looking a bit dicey, but hopefully the afternoon thundershowers hold off until the competitors make it to Mt. Crested Butte and the finish line. Start planning ahead for potential road closures in the area, as well. Have a really good start to your week!

Spotted!

Get it, “spotted” . . . ?

Hi All and Happy Friday!  I hope you’re clicking in, strapping down, lacing up or casting off for another excellent weekend on the Gunnison Country!  We have all kinds of stuff going around the valley this weekend, kickin’ it off with free lift rides on the Red Lady Express at Crested Butte Mountain Resort for another installment of the Friday night pedal ‘n groove tonight.  Over Saturday and Sunday we have the Gunnison car show and crafts festival, the Elk Mountain Grand Traverse Run & Bike and the West Elk Archers High Mountain 3D Shoot.  Then on Tuesday of next week, Mt. Crested Butte hosts a stage finish of the USA Pro Cycle Challenge, so there isn’t any shortage of things to keep you entertained around the area over the next few days (check out local events calendars for details).  If you are travelling through Colorado this coming week, you may want to check out the Pro Cycle Challenge schedule to make sure that the roads you’re planning on using aren’t going to be impacted for the event.  On next Tuesday, for instance, the bike race will be starting in Aspen and coming to Crested Butte via highway 133 and Kebler Pass.  On Wednesday, the race stage will be starting in Gunnison, heading over to Salida, then climbing back up Monarch Pass for the finish, so highway 50 between Gunni and Salida will be tied up for a chunk of the day.

Today’s shot is of some elk I saw out in the high country woods—I thought you’d enjoy the photo.  Have a fabulous weekend and we’ll see you next week.

Rainy Day Forecasted for Crested Butte

14-08-14_sunbeams

Thursday morning finds Crested Butte under mostly cloudy skies with the forecast promising a seventy-percent chance of rain after 10am this morning.  The weather radar shows a pretty big swath of color headed our way, so it looks like we’re in for a drenching.  Today’s shot is looking up-valley from CB South at the sunbeams streaming into the valley with the silhouette of Mt. Emmons in the background.  Stay dry out there today!

Keeping it Happy and Bright at Crested Butte Mountain Resort

14-08-12_moreflowers

Tuesday’s shot is of some particularly happy looking flowers on a cloudy afternoon near the top of the Painter Boy and Gold Link lifts at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.  Like yesterday, we have a decent chance for thundershowers this afternoon.  Keep your eyes to the skies (and your rain jacket handy) if you’re heading out to the backcountry to play today.  Have a good one and we’ll catch you tomorrow.

Colorful Crested Butte

14-08-11_flowers

We’re easing into another workweek in Crested Butte this morning with a shot that I found this weekend at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.  This riot of pinkish-purple flowers is still crankin’ on the color and looking great.  If you’re heading out to hunt up some wildflower meadows for yourself today, heads-up for the forty-percent of afternoon of scattered thunderstorms in the forecast.  But this morning we’re under clear blue skies and breathing cool mountain air . . . feels like perfect weather for a mountain bike ride, so that’s where I’m headed.  Have a really good day, don’t forget to check out the free Alpenglow concert this evening on the Center for the Arts outdoor stage and we’ll see you tomorrow.
